Balint Erdi
Platform Engineer – ProductI’m from Budapest, Hungary, and was lucky (brave?) enough to live a year in France as a college student and 1+2 years in Catalonia, Spain. The first year was right after college and the two years were between 2021 and 2023 with my family.
Speaking of which, I have three kids who are 16, 13 and 4 (I guess we needed a break?) years old. On the photo I’m with my youngest one.
As related to work, I’ve been doing software development for more than two decades, about evenly split between back-end and front-end. Delving into the front-end side of things coincided with my getting to know Ember.js, so I now have 10+ years of Ember work under my belt.
Hobbies and interests
I’m a sucker for languages, with a bent towards the Latin ones, though this might also be because once you learn one Latin language, the others are relatively easy to learn.
Like everybody, I love traveling, and like a lot of people, I love hiking. I’m not religious, but if I were, I would say that God lives in the middle of a forest or on a rugged mountain slope, as that’s where I feel most spiritual.
I also like to play all kinds of team sports (football being #1) and I make an effort to get regular exercise which mostly involves kettlebells in a gym (and on rare occasions, on a beach).
I don’t have to be asked twice to play and kind of card or board games and I absolutely love playing chess. I’m still just half-decent though – if you think Ember.js has a steep learning curve, I suggest you try chess!
Fun fact
It’s not so much fun as it’s a fact but here it goes: I’m old enough to have lived the first 12 years of my life during communism in Hungary.
A few things remain in my conscience from those times: a skepticism for authority (or so I make myself believe), possibly a slightly higher appreciation of simple things money can buy, and –on rare occasions– a knot in my stomach as I approach a familiar border by car: will border guards find the 10 cans of plum jam we’re smuggling in the trunk?
